10 AM Every spring, when the ground thaws, nighttime temperatures exceedforty degrees, and rain begins to fall, amphibians can make massive migrations. On these nights, known as “big nights”, one may find dozens or even hundreds of frogs and salamanders moving about as they move toward their breeding grounds.

SMGC and Longfellow Garden Club will join together for this Zoom presentation.

Jessica may cover topics on how to improve your garden yourself such as: shrub care, spring cleanup and good soil, and a wide range of general tips including pruning and hydrangea care.

Learn about herbs that can help to calm and relax the nervous system, support the body’s ability to better manage stressors, and learn how to integrate them in fun ways into a daily routine to bring balance to body and mind. Taste test various teas, and take home recipes that support the nervous system.

Program: Creation of Hypertufa, with SMGC member Marianne Dodge. St. Mary's Parish Hall. Open to guests.

10 AM Hypertufa are containers such as troughs that are excellent for container gardening, to grow small plants such as edelweiss and sedum. Troughs were originally made from tufa (a naturally occurring lightweight volcanic rock); however, since Maine has no local source of tufa, hypertufa fits the need for a container that drains well. Marianne will show how it’s done and explain why they can be so useful.

Program: Discussion of the documentary Commobn Ground, St. Mary's Parish Hall

10 AM We will re-group to discuss the movie: our thoughts, reactions and more. After the discussion and business meeting, anyone interested can join Susan Carter for a hands-on demonstration on pruning for aesthetics as we walk through the St. Mary’s gardens and clip some of the overgrown shrubs and bushes before their winter sleep.

Film Screening: Common Ground, St. Mary's Parish Hall

Come together on Sunday afternoon from 1-3 in the St. Mary’s auditorium for an afternoon screening of the International Green Film Award 2024 winning documentary, “Common Ground,” which explores the growing regenerative agriculture movement. Popcorn and drinks will be provided. We will discuss the film at the monthly meeting on November 11.

10 AM Maureen Goronson and her husband own and manage MOFGA and The REAL Organic certified Goronson Farm. Maureen runs a Floristry Studio in her Flower Shop on the farm, where she designs wedding & event flowers, and hand-tied bouquets. She has been designing/creating floral arrangements for special events for over 25 years specializing in Woodland Design. She will present a workshop on how to build a woodland centerpiece of natural found materials to usher in the Fall Holidays.

10 AM In celebration of our first meeting of the season, we’ll catch up with each other and share design ideas in a hands-on activity. Members should bring a container, their own snips and shears, and an assortment of flowers, greens, fruits, and vegetables. At the meeting, we’ll work together informally in groups to create centerpieces in the following six color schemes: Blue, white, and yellow; Red, pink, and plum; White, pink, and peach; Green and white, white and citrus, Cream, berry, and russet.

10 AM Specializing in flower farming in Maine is a challenge and an adventure. Jennifer Baecher, East of Eden Flower Farm in Bowdoinham, will speak on the varieties, care and tricks of dahlias. She will show us how to split tubers and will bring some of her tubers to sell.

10 AM Foodscaping cleverly fits edibles among our flowers and other plants is attractive ways.  As Nardozzi says, "the edible gardening trend reaches into personal lives and communities to help create a culture of growing healthy, safe food, eating better, and creating more livable communities....”.  Often the temptation is to segment the yard into areas with the edible garden relegated to a back yard... but you can combine edibles with almost any planting and still have it look beautiful.
